POLICE
are warning of the dangers of attempting to make explosive devices after a
15-year-old boy from Chorley was given a
12-month supervision order.
The
teenager appeared at Preston Youth Court today (Monday 14 February) where he
received the order after he was convicted of explosive offences and pleaded
guilty to the possession of live ammunition.
If
the teenager does not comply with the order he will receive an immediate
custodial sentence.
Det
Insp Paul Rudd from Lancashire Constabulary said: “The boy claimed that he was
trying to make poison to kill rats and accidental contamination made it become
an explosive device.
“The
explosive wasn’t mixed in the correct quantities so it must be stressed that no
danger was posed to any members of the public at any time.
“This
should serve as a warning though that that we treat such offences extremely
seriously. Anyone committing such offences, including this teenager, will
face consequences for the rest of their lives.
“Parents
need to be responsible in making sure that they know what their children are
doing and, along with wider members of the community, report any suspicious
activity to the police.”
The
sentence follows a three-day trial at Preston Youth Court.
Any
suspicious activity can be reported to the police on 0845 1 25 35 45.
